Andrew M. Greeley: The Bishop in the West Wing
The Bishop in the West Wing is another installment in Father Greeley's Blackie Ryan series. Blackie's «good friend» the newly elected President Machine Gun Jack McGurn calls for his help in dealing with a poltergeist in the White House. The mystery and plot are great. I had two minor annoyances with this book. One was the constant anti-Republican hammering, complete with the implication that Republicans would condone political assassination, which I think was creative license and hyperbole for effect. It was also made up for by the poltergeist problems being caused by the vile machinations of the Democrat Vice-President. The second annoyance is an affectation involving the dropping of the «ly» from the word «extremely». Apparently this must be in vogue among Chicago teens (or whereever Greeley actually lives), but I've never noticed it in this area or even on TV or movies. In any case, it wouldn't be so annoying if he just had the kids doing it, but for some reason he has all the characters picking up the habit, so that even adults are saying things like «He's extreme cool» and «she's extreme good looking». It's enough to drop a 4 star book to 3.8 stars.
