James Herbert: Once
Once is the story of Thom Kindred (suggestive name, right?), a man hit at a relatively young age with a stroke who leaves London to recuperate at his boyhead home, Castle Bracken. He actually moves into a secluded cottage near the castle called «Little Bracken», only to be almost immediately accosted by hostile fey forces, though not until after he spies on a naked fairy girl. But it's not all bad news for Thom. His first night in the cottage ends with neighbor Nell Quick, arriving to cook his breakfast. «She stood about five foot six and he guessed her to be in her late twenties, maybe early thirties. Her high breasts swelled against a plain buttoned blouse...» And his physical therapist is quite attractive, too. But as might be expected with the fey, things get worse. As the book cover puts it, his «return has stirred an ancient evil at Castle Bracken, one cloaked in the guise of a friend.»
I picked this book up for $1 new at the Dollar General. I highly recommend checking their paperback selection whenver you can, unless you feel the need to read every bestseller while it's on the bestseller list and don't enjoy occasionally discovering a gem that's not a bestseller. The books are $1, so even if you come across a stinker, you can buy 6 more for the price you'd pay for one new book anywhere else. (Unfortunately, it's been a year since I bought this, so I doubt it's available for $1 there anymore, but Amazon has used copies for that price range plus shipping.)
