John Macleod: Dynasty: The Stuarts 1560-1807

Dynasty : The Stuarts: 1560-1807

Dynasty : The Stuarts: 1560-1807 is the story of the Stuart Dynasty with an emphasis on the period from the accession of Mary Queen of Scots to personal rule in 1560 to the overthrow of James VII and II in 1688. Of twelve chapters, ten are devoted to this period. The first chapter looks at the origin of the Stuarts as the Stewards of Scotland under the Bruce's. The last chapter looks at the Jacobites and the later Stuart pretenders to the throne.

The fascination of the story of the Stewarts or Stuarts is that theirs is the story of Scottish liberty, British Union and English domination. It's the story of Catholic piety and freedom of conscience, of religious intolerance even towards monarchs. Perhaps more than most monarchs the family struggles, internal and external, of the Stuarts mirrored the internal struggles of their united kingdoms.
