With American Gods, Neil Gaiman delivers his usual wit in a mixture of fantasy, mythology, action and suspense. The plot is thick and only gets thicker as our unlikely hero Shadow begins the novel released from prison a few days early so he can attend the funeral of his wife and, as it turns out, his best friend as well. The theme behind the plot is the struggle of the old gods, represented by «Mr. Wednesday» against the new American Gods - the internet, fast cars, commercialism, credit cards, advertising. Anyone who has ever visited the Temple of Elemental Evil, pardon me, the Precious Moments Chapel, will understand the references to roadside attractions being the American equivalents of Stonehenge, whether you believe in the mystical significance, ley lines, etc. or not.
This book is a favorite book by a favorite author. I even created a character on an online game based on Shadow.
