Dan Brown: Angels and Demons

Angels & Demons, Special Illustrated Edition

Angels & Demons by Dan Brown is the prequel to the more well known bestseller The Da Vinci Code. Robert Langdon is an art historian drawn into a conspiracy after the death of a CERN physicist. (You don't know what CERN is? CERN is a particle physics lab in Switzerland, really THE particle physics lab. More importantly at the moment, CERN is the place where a team led by Tim Berniers Lee invented something very important to us right now - the hypertext transfer protocol, which you and I call «the World Wide Web». Al Gore eat your heart out.) The dead scientist was working on antimatter and it turns out had created a chunk of the stuff sufficient to cause a pretty bit of damage and the killer has made off with the antimatter.

The trail of the murderer leads Langdon to the Vatican where the recently deceased pope's chamberlain grants him unfettered access to the Vatican Secret Archives to solve the mystery.

I mentioned a conspiracy, didn't I. Well, it turns out to be a big one, perhaps the big one. Yes, the dread Illuminati of Bavarian eye-in-the-pyramid fame seem to be behind the death of the scientist.

The suspense is great. The references to art, architecture and history will have you ready to take a trip to Rome, while the references to the CERN laboratory will have Google employees wanting to give up their jobs. The Illuminati references will pique the interest of conspiracy buffs, though Langdon's take on the Illuminati paints the historical Illuminati as more sinister than many historians believe, but much more benign than the hardcore conspiracy theorists will accept. What's most surprising is that Brown does very little tie in with the Priory of Sion even though there are apparent historical connections between that group, which is at the center of The Da Vinci Code, and the Illuminati.
